Chef delivers his own baby using apron strings to cut the cord

A chef delivered his own son and then used his apron strings to cut the cord. Costas Mina, 44, from Barnet, normally uses his creativity to cook food but this time it was required to help his wife Natalie, 30, give birth. He flew into action after she went into labour in the bath at home.

Mr Mina, who was being guided by the 999 operator, had to quickly figure out a way to cut the umbilical cord after it had initially wrapped itself around the baby Harry’s neck. He said: ‘It was all such a rush and Natalie was obviously screaming the house down. ‘But I was asked by the ambulance helper to check on Harry and I noticed he wasn’t crying. ‘As soon as I untangled the umbilical cord I heard him gasp and then belt out this cry. ‘Then the guy on the phone was telling me to get some string to cut the cord.’

That’s when he grabbed his apron from the wardrobe and then used a string from it to cut the cord. Within an hour the midwife arrived and they were all taken to Barnet General Hospital in north London. Harry and his mum were checked and given the all clear. He weighed a healthy 5oz 7lbs.

Mr Mina, who praised his brave wife for giving birth without any pain relief, even got to name his son. He said: ‘I sat in the chair and got my phone out and started scrolling through Facebook. ‘The Tottenham football page had just put up a post wishing Harry Kane a happy birthday. ‘I turned to Natalie and joked we should name him after Harry and it just stuck. ‘To be honest she was probably too exhausted to argue back. So it just stuck. ‘Not only did I get to deliver my son but I also got to name him after one of my favourite players!’ They are now all at home with Harry’s 19-month-old daughter Amber.
